1. В английском языке существует выражение «You are what you eat», что переводится как «Ты — то, что ты ешь». Сегодня интернет–сообщество «не щадит» такие емкие и броские фразы и создает их вариации на любой вкус: «You are what you tweet», «You are what you do», «You are what you listen to» и многие другие. Однако в рамках темы данной статьи нас интересуется следующая модификация: «You are what you read».

3. О пользе чтения как таковой сказано уже очень много. Кто–то даже считает, что о человеке можно судить не только по его друзьям, но и по прочитанным им книгам. В этой статье мы поговорим о пользе чтения книг на английском, о том, как читать книги максимально эффективно, и, наконец, о том, с каких книг лучше начать свое путешествие в мир литературы в оригинале.

5. Как чтение книг поможет мне с моим английским?

7. 1. Чтение помогает увеличить словарный запас. Читая книгу, вы видите сотни слов и некоторые из них «впитываете» прямо на ходу, без помощи словаря. Такой способ запоминания самый надежный. В следующий раз, когда вы увидите выученное при чтении слово, вы сможете не только вспомнить, что оно значит, но и в какой книге вы его встретили впервые. Более того, при чтении активизируется зрительная память. Таким образом, вы еще и запомните, как то или иное слово правильно пишется. К тому же обогащается и ваш активный словарный запас. Вы можете знать много слов, но не уметь их использовать в своей собственной речи. Из книг вы узнаете, как правильно их использовать в предложениях.

9. 2. Чтение помогает с грамматикой. Сомневаться в грамотности авторов признанных шедевров не приходится. Поэтому если вы читаете что–то подобное, обращайте внимание на времена, которые используются автором, пытайтесь понять, почему в данном предложении именно такой порядок слов. Конечно (и это относится ко всему процессу чтения в целом), не стоит маниакально зацикливаться на каждом артикле. Поиск оснований для использования определенной грамматики не должен мешать самому главному в чтении — удовольствию.

11. 3. Чтение в оригинале позволяет «прочувствовать» стиль автора. Просторечия, игра слов, ругательства, наконец, — все это часто искажается переводом. Бывает так, что даже очень талантливый и опытный переводчик просто не в состоянии передать тот колорит и остроту, которые присутствуют в языке автора. Читая литературу в оригинале, вы «защищены» от издержек перевода.

13. Как читать книги на английском максимально эффективно?

• Не переводите каждое слово. По возможности вообще ничего не переводите. Прибегайте к словарю лишь в крайнем случае. Какой случай считать «крайним»? Возможны две ситуации: какое–то слово встречается вам очень часто и «мозолит» глаза»; или в предложении вам встретилось такое слово, которое очень важно для понимания сути сказанного. Чаще всего такое слово — либо существительное, либо глагол. Итак, даже если вы расценили случай как «крайний», не спешите искать  англо–русский словарь. Для начала попробуйте толковый, то есть англо–английский. Прочтите определение искомого слова, постарайтесь применить выясненное к тому предложению (контексту), в котором вы это слово встретили.

• Делайте пересказ прочитанного. Для того чтобы проверить, как вы поняли содержание главы или страницы, нужно попробовать пересказать главные события. В случае, если вы поняли текст, то сделать пересказ вам удастся без труда.

• Читайте разное. Не зацикливайтесь на одном авторе, жанре, формате подачи. Читайте как детективы, так и любовные романы, как книги по бизнесу, так и детские сказки. Главное — выбирайте то, что вам интересно, иначе процесс превратится в муку, а эффективность этого предприятия будет стремиться к нулю.

• Выбирайте книги в соответствии с вашим уровнем английского. Книга не должна быть ни слишком сложной, ни слишком простой. Как определить сложность книги и ее соответствие вашему уровню (более подробно об уровнях английского языка читайте здесь)? Оптимальное количество неизвестных слов на страницу книги должно быть около 10 (независимо от того, можете вы догадаться об их значении из контекста или нет). Не стремитесь считать количество новых слов, прикиньте примерно. Еще одно важное замечание: не делайте выводы о сложности книги до того, как преодолеете первые несколько глав. В них чаще всего даются подробные описания героев (внешность, характер), окружающей природы. В этом введении всегда очень много прилагательных, большинство из которых вы больше нигде и никогда не встретите. В общем, не судите о книге не только по обложке, но и по первым главам!

4. Часто бывает, что студенты сразу хотят прикоснуться к классике: Диккенс, Лондон, Брэдбери, да чего уж там, Шекспир! Такое рвение похвально, однако здесь таких смельчаков подстерегает опасность: отбить охоту к чтению раз и навсегда, ведь, признаем, назвать классику легким (во всех смыслах) чтивом язык не повернется.

Мы советуем попробовать почитать современные хиты, такие как «Гарри Поттер» (эта серия, вопреки расхожему мнению, подойдет не только детям, но и взрослым), «Голодные игры» (намного более подростковое чтиво, чем предыдущий пункт, но тоже довольно увлекательное), большинство книг Стивена Кинга, одну (любую) книгу Дэна Брауна (вообще оторваться не сможете). Так вам будет проще влиться в мир литературы в оригинале и позже перейти на что–то более продвинутое (опять же, во всех смыслах).

Те, кто много читает, обычно не имеют проблем с орфографией и синтаксисом. Опять же, этот бонус — результат чтения и тренировки визуального восприятия.

Итак, как именно лучше всего читать?

Я рекомендую вам обзавестись электронной книгой, лучше всего, Kindle. В нее вы можете загрузить словарь и пару десятков книг и постепенно читать. Посмотреть перевод незнакомого слова проще простого — всего лишь нужно 1) подключить словарь (я использую НБАРС) и 2) несколько раз нажать стрелочку, чтобы переместить мигающую линию перед словом, и его перевод появится внизу или вверху странички.

Многие из классических книг можно скачать бесплатно на сайте Amazon.com или Gutenberg.org. Множество бестселлеров в формате .mobi вы найдете в продаже на сайте amazon.com.

Three Men in a Boat

An epic tale of passion, betrayal, and survival in World War II Russia. Leningrad, 1941: The European war seems far away in this city of fallen grandeur, where splendid palaces and stately boulevards speak of a different age, when the city was known as St. Petersburg. Now two sisters, Tatiana and Dasha Metanov, live in a cramped apartment, sharing one room with their brother and parents. Such are the harsh realities of Stalin’s Russia, but when Hitler invades the country, the siege of its cities makes the previous severe conditions seem luxurious. Against this backdrop of danger and uncertainty, Tatiana meets Alexander, an officer in the Red Army whose self-confidence sets him apart from most Russian men and helps to conceal a mysterious and troubled past.
